Learning Experience Overview
PERT Writing: College Readiness Test Preparation is a comprehensive, self-paced test-preparation course designed to strengthen the writing, editing, and revision skills associated with Florida’s Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT).
An important distinction is built into the course from the beginning: the PERT Writing subtest is a multiple-choice editing and revision assessment. You do not write an essay or submit a writing sample. The course therefore focuses on recognizing problems in sentences and passages, evaluating possible revisions, and selecting the option that produces the clearest, most accurate, and most effective writing.
Across six lessons, learners progress from sentence-level grammar and punctuation to larger questions involving style, tone, thesis, organization, development, and the accurate use of sources. Each lesson combines explicit instruction with fully worked examples that explain not only why the correct answer works, but also the specific problem with competing answer choices.
Practice sets provide immediate feedback and unlimited opportunities to strengthen developing skills before learners move to graded lesson quizzes and a cumulative final assessment.

- Distinguish complete sentences from fragments, comma splices, and fused sentences and select appropriate revisions.

- Improve sentences through precise word choice, concision, appropriate register, consistent tone, and purposeful use of voice.
- Distinguish a topic or fact from a defensible thesis and evaluate whether a thesis appropriately controls a passage.
- Evaluate focus, relevance, organization, sentence placement, transitions, and coherence.
- Determine whether evidence genuinely supports a claim and recognize irrelevant, insufficient, or overstated support.
- Revise claims and sentences for appropriate strength, clarity, and logical relationships.
- Represent sources accurately, distinguish quotation from paraphrase, use appropriate attribution, and synthesize information from multiple sources.
