Learning Experience Overview
Mastering English Language Skills for the FTCE General Knowledge Exam is built for one purpose: getting teacher candidates ready for the English Language Skills subtest, following the official FTCE test blueprint from start to finish. It doesn’t assume recent coursework in grammar or linguistics — every rule is taught from the ground up, so it works equally well as a refresher or a first pass.
The course is organized into five lessons, each built around one of the subtest’s tested competencies: sentence structure and modifiers, vocabulary in context and word choice, verbs and agreement, adjectives and comparisons, and mechanics. Every lesson follows the same rhythm — a narrated content module that walks through the rule with fully worked examples and a common-mistakes review, an untimed practice set for low-stakes repetition, and (for the first four lessons) a graded quiz that checks whether the material has stuck. Nothing in the practice sets or quizzes repeats — every question across every activity was written fresh for this course.
After the fifth lesson, a 20-question cumulative final exam pulls from all five lessons, weighted the same way the real FTCE weighs its competencies, so it mirrors the balance a candidate will actually see on test day. Learners can move through the material at their own pace, in any order that suits them, and revisit any lesson, practice set, or quiz as many times as they’d like before sitting for the real exam.

- Identify and correct sentence fragments and run-ons, revise faulty parallel structure, and locate and fix misplaced and dangling modifiers.
- Determine word meaning from context, distinguish between commonly confused and misused words, and judge whether diction and tone fit a stated audience and purpose.
- Maintain consistent verb tense, apply subject-verb agreement in sentences with intervening phrases and compound subjects, and correct pronoun agreement and case errors.
- Distinguish correct adjective and adverb use, form comparative and superlative forms correctly (including irregular forms), and identify and correct double negatives and related usage errors.
- Apply standard comma rules, use apostrophes and other punctuation correctly, and follow standard capitalization and spelling conventions.
