Learning Experience Overview
Mastering Social Science for the FTCE Elementary Education K–6 Exam is a self-paced test-preparation course designed to help teacher candidates strengthen the social science knowledge and instructional judgment relevant to the Social Science subtest of the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) Elementary Education K–6 exam.
The course addresses the breadth and pacing demands described in the source syllabus through five focused lessons: instructional practice and assessment in the social sciences; history; geography; civics and government; and economics. Participants work through narrated instruction, original practice questions with feedback, graded lesson quizzes, and a cumulative final exam.
Lesson 1 emphasizes pedagogical content knowledge and instructional decision-making in social science. Lessons 2–5 focus on the participant’s own content knowledge in history, geography, civics and government, and economics. All practice questions and examples are original EmpowerED Professional Learning materials and are not reproduced from an official FTCE test form.
The course is designed for self-paced independent study and may also support an instructor-led review session, study group, or district test-preparation cohort.
Learning Outcomes
- Select appropriate resources, planning tools, assessment methods, and learning environments for the instructional delivery of social science concepts.
- Analyze cause and effect in historical events; sequence events; distinguish primary and secondary sources; and describe significant cultures, developments, leaders, exploration and settlement patterns, immigration history, and early and classical civilizations relevant to elementary social science.
- Apply the six essential elements of geography; analyze maps and other representations; use spatial tools and technologies; interpret statistics comparing places; and explain human adaptation, migration, environmental effects, and major world regions.
- Explain the structure, functions, and purposes of federal, state, and local government; citizens’ rights and responsibilities; major constitutional concepts and founding documents; separation and sharing of powers; elections; and legal processes.
- Explain scarcity, currency, markets, consumer decisions, economic interdependence, and the use of human, natural, and capital resources in the production of goods and services.
